The Process

Call for Nominees:

Back in July, The Episodic published an announcement requesting submissions from site producers in the following categories:

The eligibility period under consideration was September 1, 2000 through August 31, 2001. Scenes and storylines must have been published during that timeframe to be considered. In addition, series that premiered during that time period must have produced at least twelve episodes to be eligible.

Judging:

Once all the submissions and scenes/excerpts were received, our four-member panel used a ballot to mark scores in several different areas, depending on the nominee category.

For example: In the Outstanding Series category, judges visited the sites and read each of the submitted episodes. They then scored the candidate in three areas: Writing, Design, and Interactivity. In addition, there was also an "Overall Impression" score.

The highest possible score from each judge in this category was 10; the lowest was 1. The judges' scores were averaged together to get a final total. The top five scores were chosen as nominees. In case of a tie, judges had the option of extending the number of nominees to six or seven (depending on the number of tie scores).

1. Beginning Monday, September 24, our audience had the opportunity to vote for the recipients of the Audience Choice Awards. The ballot consisted of the official list of Eppy Award nominees, but additionally offered voters the chance to write in their own candidates. To help them make an informed choice, scenes and episodes submitted by the nominee producers were made available for the audience on this site.

2. For the next round of the Editors' Choice Awards, the judges examined the nominees in greater depth. Nominated producers had until Monday, September 24 to submit two more examples of character scenes, and two scenes that illustrate how their Storyline nominee was executed in the series itself. Outstanding Series nominees were asked to submit two additional episodes. For the Outstanding Series cateogry, each site will also be traveled extensively, with judges viewing and following as many links as possible throughout the site.

We announced the final winners of both the Audience and Editors' Choice Awards in our October 15, 2001 issue.
